December Veterinary Clinic NewsletterYour Trusted Partner in Pet Care

Season's Greetings from The Vet Station!

As we approach the end of the festive season, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for trusting us with the care of your beloved pets. December is a month full of joy, but it also comes with some unique challenges when it comes to keeping our furry friends safe and healthy. In this edition, we’ve included some useful tips for travelling with your pets over the holidays, along with the heartwarming success story of our recent dental care campaign. Let’s dive in!

Holiday Travel Tips for Pets

The holiday season is a time for adventure and family reunions, but if you have more travel planned with your pet, there are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure their safety and comfort. Here are our top tips for stress-free travel with your furry companion:

1. Pre-trip Check-up:Before hitting the road or boarding a plane, schedule a check-up with us to ensure your pet is healthy and ready for travel. If your pet is on medication or has special needs, we’ll help ensure you have everything you need for the journey. Your pet may need travel documents which need to be planned well in advance. Speak to Gill or Vanessa, our qualified official veterinarians for more information.

2. Proper Identification:Make sure your pet is microchipped, or at the very least, has a collar with an up-to-date ID tag. It’s easy for pets to get lost in unfamiliar places, and proper identification can make all the difference.

3. Comfortable Carrier:If you're flying, a comfortable, well-ventilated carrier is essential. For road trips, a seatbelt harness or a pet car seat can keep your pet secure and prevent distractions while driving.

4. Plan for Breaks:On long drives, plan to take regular breaks for bathroom and water stops. This helps reduce stress for your pet and allows them to stretch their legs.

5. Keep Travel Essentials Handy:Pack your pet’s essentials, including food, water, medications, toys, and a blanket or bedding that smells like home. Familiar scents can provide comfort during the trip.

6. Be Mindful of Holiday Hazards:Holiday decorations, foods, and plants can be dangerous to pets. Make sure your pet stays away from things like tinsel, mistletoe, and poinsettias, which can be toxic. Keep holiday treats (especially chocolate!) out of reach!

A Successful Dental Campaign: A Healthy Smile for All Pets!

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Dental Health Awareness Campaign offering 50% off dentistry, which was met with an overwhelming response from our community. Over the past month, we provided discounted dental check-ups and cleanings to promote better oral health for our patients.

Why is dental care so important?Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in pets, affecting nearly 80% of dogs and 70% of cats by the age of three. If left untreated, dental problems can lead to serious complications, including pain, infections, and even organ damage. That's why regular dental care is essential for your pet’s overall well-being.

Campaign Results:We saw over 80 pets during our campaign, and many of them received much-needed cleanings, extractions, and dental health tips. One particularly heartwarming case involved Bella, a 7-year-old Golden Retriever who came to us with severe tartar buildup and a few infected teeth. After a thorough cleaning and a series of treatments, Bella’s owners were amazed at the transformation! Not only did Bella’s smile shine, but her energy and appetite also improved dramatically, making her even more of a joy to be around. We also treated many cats who suffer from conditions known as 'FORLs' which can go undetected. This is a painful resorptive condition of the teeth requiring extractions.

A Special Thank You:We want to thank all the pet owners who participated in our dental campaign. Your commitment to your pets’ oral health is helping to ensure longer, happier lives for them. As a reminder, dental care doesn’t end with a single cleaning. Be sure to continue regular brushing and dental check-ups with us.

Dr. Ellie is outstanding in the field of dentistry!

We are proud to announce that Dr. Ellie, one of our dedicated veterinarians, has successfully completed her graduate Veterinary Dental Course! This comprehensive program covered everything from routine cleanings to more complex dental surgeries, ensuring that Dr. Ellie is equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge in veterinary dentistry. Her hard work and commitment to expanding her skills will directly benefit the pets we care for, allowing us to offer even more specialized dental treatments to our patients. We are thrilled to have such a talented and passionate veterinarian on our team, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of her new expertise on our patients’ oral health!

Vanessa joins forces with the charity Broken Biscuits to address Parliament

Vanessa and Calum traveled to Westminster to speak at a parliamentary meeting concerning our worries about animal welfare. Specifically, we are concerned about the heightened risk of IVDD in French Bulldogs and the resulting paralysis.

Vanessa, along with Tim from Broken Biscuits, addressed groups with similar views. We must make an impact on animal welfare!
